Michael and Mary MacAree (Nee Wallace) married in Clough, Co Down Ireland in 1917. He was from Castleblaney in Co Monahan and she was from Waterford in Co Waterford. He became a postman at the age of 13 and on his retirement at 60 in 1949, he was awarded the Imperial Service Medal by King George VI. In 1955 he became the warden of the Youth Hostel in Newcastle, Co Down for another 20 years. In Clough, they had six children, Malachy, Mary, Ethna, Gerard, Vincent and Mary.
The pictures below are of three generations. Firstly, Mary Wallace as a baby in 1892 when she was born. Sadly her mother Eliza Connan died only two years later. At, at the time her father was a Sergent Major in the army in the Royal Irish Fusiliers 87th Regiment (this is actually a 'painted photograph'). The family lived in Waterford, Collins Barracks, Dublin and Newcastle, Co Down. Secondly, Mary Wallace and Micheal MacAree just married in 1917. Thirdly four of their six childern, Ethna, Malachy, Mary and Clare with their families in Newcastle Youth Hostel Garden, Co Down, in about 1958.
This page is the repository of some of the documents, photographs and videos, relating to the family. There are some 250 images dating from 1879. Malachy their son, a keen photographer, had collected these. Also their grandchildren have carried out extensive research in the archives for the family tree. This family tree, an animated time-line map, old cine videos for the 1960s and copies of the documents are contained in other pages. There links to some wonderful pictures available or just go to Flickr.com and just search for 'MacAree Clough'.
Theresa MacAree kept a journal for 25 years. On it's first page, in 1961 she recorded the following with a note about
what all Malachy's family were doing in 1943;
"Malachy & Theresa were married in St Paul’s, Falls Road on the 28th December 1949.
They met in 1943 when Malachy was working in the Ulster Engineering, Victoria St and Theresa was nursing in the Down Country Infirmary, Downpatrick.
At that time Malachy’s father was postman in Clough, Mary worked in the post office, Ethna Irvines, Gerard in Flynns of Dundrum, Vincent in Jordans some days."
